What is an X-ray examination?

Radiology uses X-rays (ionising radiation) to produce images of your horse’s skeleton and certain structures. Using this technique, we can:

  • Assessing the bone structure

  • Analysing the joints

  • Revealing the internal bone structure

X-rays are very commonly used in the following situations:

  • Lameness examination

  • Lameness examination

Thanks to modern equipment, we are able to obtain clear images quickly, which is essential for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Radiography in pre-purchase and pre-sale inspections

When buying or selling a horse, X-ray examination is an important part of the veterinary assessment. This enables potential risks to be identified at an early stage. Common findings include:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Cysts, OCD and other bone fragments

  • Ossified hoof cartilage

  • Kissing Spines

This information helps buyers and sellers to make an informed decision and avoid any surprises in the future.

Radiography as part of a lameness examination

If your horse is lame, radiography is often the first step in the diagnostic process. Possible radiographic findings include:

  • Detection of soft-tissue swellings

  • New bone formation (e.g. splint)

  • Osteoarthritis (joint wear and tear)

  • Ossified hoof cartilages

  • Tilted hoof bone

  • OCD and cystic lesions

  • Kissing Spines

Although X-ray examinations are extremely valuable, a direct cause of the lameness is identified in only 30–40 per cent of cases. In the remaining cases, additional imaging may be required, such as an MRI scan.

Radiography is particularly suitable for assessing bones and joints. Other techniques, such as ultrasound or MRI, are used for soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments and muscles. These techniques are often used in combination to provide a comprehensive diagnosis.

X-ray examination is a reliable and widely used first step in the diagnostic process. It provides a quick insight into bone structures, but not all causes of lameness are visible. For this reason, further investigations may sometimes be necessary.

Yes, radiology is not only used when symptoms arise, but also as a preventative measure. Examples include the early detection of abnormalities or assessing the health of bones and joints, for example in sport horses.

In many cases, the X-ray images are assessed immediately by the vet. For more complex examinations, a detailed analysis may take a little longer, but you will usually receive a clear diagnosis quickly.
