Clinical assessment

During a clinical examination, we assess your horse’s general health and musculoskeletal system. This enables us to carefully assess its state of health.

Clinical examination

Would you like to have a horse examined before proceeding with the purchase? At Dierenkliniek Den Ham, we carry out a comprehensive clinical examination of horses. During this pre-purchase examination, we assess the horse’s general health and musculoskeletal system, so that you can make an informed decision.

What is a clinical examination?

A clinical examination is a comprehensive veterinary assessment in which a horse’s general health and musculoskeletal system are evaluated. During this examination, we look for any abnormalities that are present at the time or that may cause problems in the future.

Always have a horse clinically examined again. A previous examination report is, after all, merely a snapshot and offers no guarantee as to the horse’s current state of health. After all, you do not know what may have happened in the meantime.

As a buyer, you have a duty to investigate, whilst the seller has a duty to disclose. A recent clinical examination therefore provides extra reassurance when purchasing a horse.

What do we assess during a clinical examination?

During every clinical purchase assessment, we follow a set protocol. As part of this, we assess, amongst other things:

  • Heart

  • Lungs

  • Teeth

  • Eyes

  • Legwork

  • General health

We then assess the horse in motion. The horse walks in a straight line on a hard surface, followed by a circle on both hard and soft ground. We also carry out bending tests. This enables us to identify any irregularities or lameness, or to rule them out.

Further X-ray investigations?

A clinical examination provides a good indication of a horse’s health and musculoskeletal system. Depending on the horse’s age, intended use and purchase price, it may be advisable to supplement the examination with X-rays.

X-rays can reveal abnormalities in bones and joints that do not always come to light during a clinical examination. This can provide additional information when purchasing a sport, breeding or leisure horse.

Our vets will be happy to advise you on whether a combination of a clinical and radiographic examination is advisable in your situation.
